A lot of time over the summer is spent sleeping in and lying around, but while you’re relaxing it’s also great to have a good book to accompany you. Here are four books to read over the summer while your brain has nothing to do but immerse yourself in the story.
My Summer of Pink & Green by Lisa Greenwald
This was one of my comfort reads in middle school, and I hope it can become one of yours too. Although it’s a sequel, you don’t need to read the first book to understand the plot. The characters are realistic, and the character growth makes you love them even more by the end. This book is perfect if you are looking for an adorable summer romance with pacing that keeps you engaged.
Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut
Another poignant book which will leave you pondering, “Cat’s Cradle” is a satirical science-fiction book written in the 1960s about Caribbean Islanders discovering a dangerous substance that threatens the world. Though it has potentially mature themes, the message is a nuanced take on how our actions affect others and the reality of our beliefs.
Sun Damage by Sabine Durrant
Despite summer being a time for relaxation, a psychological thriller is almost necessary to keep things interesting. Reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s “And Then there Were None” or the film “Glass Onion,” this novel will keep readers guessing the whole way through as hidden secrets are uncovered.
Shubeik Lubeik by Deena Mohamed
A fantastical story about a world where wishes are sold, this graphic novel brings a new perspective to the way the world works. Written with characters to root for and its allegory for modern social issues, Mohamed manages to create a world for those working through the hardships of life.
