Are you ever feeling hungry throughout the day and regret not bringing anything to snack on? Do you ever wish that you had something to quickly grab for breakfast or share with your friends? The new Grab and Go cart, implemented in all secondary schools, was created by School Nutrition Services (SNS) and made to complement traditional cafeteria dining, making breakfast more convenient and accessible for students by providing them an additional location to grab a nutritious meal on their way to class in the morning. Luttrell, who says that starting sales are lower than expected, encouraged students to try the cart.
The Grab and Go cart currently sits at B7 in the athletic hallway, where the majority of students enter the building. “Sometimes buses are running late, and so students don’t have a chance to get to the cafeteria, so we thought it would make sense so that they could grab and go,” principal Michelle Luttrell said. “We know that students walk laps around the building in the morning, there’s not that many people sitting still in one spot, so we thought that as students are moving, they can just grab and go.”
The Grab and Go cart remains open the same duration as the cafeteria window, from eight-forty five to nine twenty. The items sold on the cart are determined by what is sold in the cafeteria, because they have to offer the same items.
“They can buy something and hang onto it,” Luttrell said. “You can get snacks, you can get drinks, because the vending machines, we’re not allowed to turn those on during the day. So, it’s a really great option just to get a little bit more food, store it away, and eat it later.”
“You can grab it and literally go, and eat it wherever you want. You can eat it while you’re walking around the building, you can get it and go sit in front of the library and eat it with your friends,” Luttrell said.
“You’re teenagers, you’re growing, you’re doing a lot of things, and you’re hungry. We don’t have access to snacks during the day,” Luttrell said. “I would just really like to see the students take advantage of it. It’s helping them stay fueled so they can stay focused in class, because it’s hard to learn when you’re really hungry. It impacts social interactions, if you’re hungry, you’re grumpy, there’s so many reasons why.”
“If students are having a difficult time financially,” Luttrell said, “they can still take advantage of free and reduced lunch through the cart. So it’s there for everyone to access.”
“It will also help our colleagues and nutrition services, because they work really hard, they’re here super early, they’re so committed to the students and to the staff,” Luttrell said. “They want to put out good, nutritious meals for everyone.”
If you are running late and need a quick breakfast, find the cart in the athletic wing before school.
