We spoke with Principal Michelle Luttrell and Assistant Principal Lacey Kimbrough about the upcoming HVAC replacement and how it will impact you.
Q: What is happening?
The start of a major HVAC system replacement project for most of the school will begin during spring break. This important project will improve the school’s facilities by replacing the system responsible for heating and air conditioning.
Q: When is it happening?
The project for the majority of the school will begin during Spring Break and continue through the summer.
Q: Will the air be safe to breathe?
Yes. The school is working with a department in LCPS called EHS (Environmental, Health, and Safety), an environmental safety group, which will be monitoring all of the dust that might be stirred up because of the project. They’ll be coming out on a regular basis once the project starts. If abnormal dust levels are detected, they’re going to notify the contractor and the LCPS project manager to implement immediate cleaning measures to make sure that the dust stays below acceptable levels.
Q: How will students be impacted?
According to Kimbrough, “students aren’t really going to be impacted other than just walking around and seeing the different phases. No classrooms will be touched, so it’s really just going to be in the hallways and the corridors.”
Q: Why will there be temporary flooring?
Some parts of our building contain original tiles from when the school was built in 1954. The temporary flooring will protect those tiles from dust as well as the amount of contractors that are going to be in and out.
Q: Will that construction cause noises during the school day?
No. The contractors will be working at night.
Q: Will any work be taking place during the school day?
Only during spring break. After students leave for the summer, that’s when they’re going to start working on the classrooms. School administration will move to the annex building, and there will be no building access for teachers until their return in August.
