On Friday, September 20 at 5:30pm, the Athletic Department inducted five former County students and one coach into the Hall of Fame
“Normally coaches have to wait five years after retirement,” coach Courtney Campbell (who started coaching at County in 1987) said. “But they decided that I might not be retiring, so they figured they better go ahead and do it at some point.” Campbell’s first job was coaching football, which he stopped coaching in 1994. However, he is still going strong, coaching the distance runners ever since he started in 1989. Being inducted into the Hall of Fame was always a long time goal of Campbell’s. “This school is my life,” he said.
Athlete inductee Patrick Joseph (class of 2013) achieved his own goal: getting on the Hall of Fame wall with his coach Courtney Campbell. Joseph ran track and field and cross country, swam, and played lacrosse. His most memorable moment of his athletic career was winning states his junior and senior year. “It was a repeat for two events, so I won the 800 meter, mile, and then I won the 800 meter mile next year as well.” Joseph’s advice to fellow or future athletes was to have fun doing the sport. “At the end of the day, you’re out here to have a good time.”
Athlete inductee Dude Moxley (class of 1972) played every sport that was available at the time he was a student, ranging from football and basketball to even wrestling. His favorite sports, which were baseball and football, had a strong impact on Moxley. “I still umpire high school baseball,” Moxley said. “I’ve done that for twenty-six years.”
Michael Anderson (class of 2013) played four years of basketball and football. Although unable to attend the ceremony, Anderson’s proud parents spoke on his behalf of the honor. “Michael always has strived to be the best at everything,” Carrie Anderson, Michael’s mother, said. “His sports had a massive impact. He played travel sports all growing up.”
Steven Graham (class of 2013) won three consecutive state championships in outdoor track, earned All-state honors six times, and eight varsity letters. He holds various school records, including being second in the 100 and 200 meters. He returned to County from 2016-2023 as an assistant cross country and track coach for the boy’s team.
Lisa Palmer (class of 1982) led her cross country team to win the Region Championship, and individually earned State Cross Country Runner-up honors as a senior. In track, Palmer qualified for states in the 1600m and 3200m as a junior and senior. Her school record has yet to be broken, and she offers a $500 scholarship to her successor. Palmer received a track scholarship to James Madison University, and later on attended George Mason University Law School. She is currently a member of the Loudoun County Bar Association.
